I am a Registered Psychologist in Alberta. I have been providing therapy to individuals, couples and families for 15 years. I have had the honor and privilege of working with people in a variety of treatment and counselling settings including residential youth and adolescent treatment, the justice system, community counselling programs, and private practice.
My Journey
My professional journey began at the University of New Brunswick. It was here that I fell in love with the study of psychology and began research within the field. I soon realized the diversity within the field of psychology and the variety of professional roles one could have as a psychologist. I knew I wanted to be with people, I wanted to talk with people and sit with them in their stories, experience and struggles and help in any way I could. Therefore, I searched for graduate school opportunities that could provide me with an extensive practicum experience.
My search lead me to a Master of Science in Marital and Family Therapy program at Loma Linda University. As a student in this program I was immersed in ‘practical’ experience from the beginning. I learned about human systems, relational and family dynamics, and emotional experience that connects all of us. I had the honor and privilege of being supervised by remarkable psychologists who created a safe and secure learning environment that allowed me to discover my strengths as a person and a therapist. They provided a safe place for me to ‘land’ when I encountered challenges and made mistakes. They modelled acceptance, curiosity, and empathy – unconditional positive regard.
Today, I stay connected to professional mentors and colleagues, as these relationships are integral to my ongoing professional growth and development. I am committed to maintaining my professional competencies through ongoing consultation, study and training. Over the past several years I have started mentoring Masters level counselling/therapy students and supervising those entering the field of psychology. In addition to my work with clients, I hold this teaching/mentoring role close to my heart as it allows me to give back to a profession that has given me so much and has become an integral part of who I am.
